Shrikes

These pictures were taken next to Freedom 7 Elementary - apparently this was an adult bird driving an offspring away. The smaller bird appeared to be begging for food and the larger bird was being very “unfriendly”.

This picture was taken by Jill Vogel in 2003 at the government center in Viera. It illustrates how the Shrike got its other common name - the butcher bird. Shrikes will kill and behead other birds, often impaling the head (or other prey such as lizards) on thorns and barbed wire fences.  This is a mockingbird that was killed by a shrike.  The shrike flew off with the head.
